UNDERSTANDING WHICH
MARKETING KPIS
ACTUALLY MATTER

Many contractors know they should be tracking their marketing, but with so many figures available it's often difficult to know which ones actually matter. Google Ads, Meta Ads and website analytics all provide a wealth of data, from impressions and clicks to engagement and traffic, but these numbers don't always translate into more enquiries or booked jobs. Whether you're a roofer, plumber, landscaper, mechanic or electrician, the most valuable KPIs are those that show whether your marketing is generating genuine leads and helping your business grow. By focusing on the metrics that reflect real customer behaviour, you can make better decisions and get more from your marketing budget.

Focus on Leads, Not Just Likes

It's always encouraging to see your Facebook posts receiving likes or your adverts reaching thousands of people, but these metrics don't pay the bills. For most local trades businesses, success should be measured by enquiries, phone calls, quote requests and booked work. While reach, impressions and engagement can indicate that your marketing is getting noticed, they shouldn't be your primary focus. Instead, keep a close eye on metrics such as click-through rate (CTR), conversion rate (CR) and cost per lead (CPL) to understand whether your campaigns are attracting customers who are genuinely interested in your services.

Different Services Need Different KPIs

The KPIs that matter most often depend on the type of service you provide. A roofer running emergency repair adverts may focus on phone calls and cost per enquiry, while a landscaper promoting larger garden transformations may pay closer attention to website enquiries and consultation bookings. A car mechanic advertising MOTs may want to track appointment bookings, whereas a plumber might measure how many emergency call-outs are generated each month. Setting the right KPIs for your business ensures you're measuring meaningful results rather than comparing yourself to businesses with completely different goals.

Don't Judge Your Marketing by One Number

Many small businesses make the mistake of focusing on a single metric without looking at the bigger picture. For example, getting hundreds of website visitors sounds impressive, but if very few of them request a quote, something needs improving.

Likewise, a cheap cost per click isn't necessarily a success if the traffic isn't converting into customers. Looking at several KPIs together, such as clicks, enquiries, CR and CPL gives a much clearer understanding of how well your marketing is performing and where improvements can be made.

Track the Whole Customer Journey

The best-performing businesses don't just measure where enquiries come from, they monitor the entire customer journey. Your Google Ads may generate the initial click, your website might convince someone to get in touch, and your sales process could determine whether they become a paying customer. By tracking website traffic, enquiries, phone calls, quote acceptance rates and completed jobs together, you gain a far better understanding of which marketing activities deliver the highest return. This allows you to invest more confidently in the channels that produce quality work.

Focus on Growing Your Business, Not Your Dashboard

At the end of the day, marketing should help your business win more profitable work, not simply produce attractive reports. Whether you're a builder, electrician, mechanic, roofer or landscaper, the KPIs that matter most are those that contribute directly to business growth. Qualified enquiries, booked jobs, customer acquisition cost and return on investment provide a far clearer picture of success than likes or impressions ever will. By focusing on meaningful KPIs instead of vanity metrics, you can make smarter marketing decisions, reduce wasted spend and build a more consistent pipeline of work throughout the year.
